Welcome to Year 3 and 4

I am the Phase Leader of Lower Key Stage 2 and I work as part of the Year 3 and 4 team to develop a broad and balanced curriculum and ensure consistency across the phase.

Years 3 and 4 are crucial years in your child’s academic development. At Malmesbury, we have two Year 3 classes (Sycamore and Chestnut) and two Year 4 classes (Cedar and Pine). It is a big transition moving from KS1 to KS2 but it is also an exciting one! The new year 3’s move upstairs, change playgrounds and have an excellent team around them to settle in ready to learn. Year 4 continue their learning journey by being challenged, immersed in an exciting curriculum and leave ready and prepared for their final phase of primary school life.

We provide many learning opportunities in addition to the curriculum. Following on from Magical Maths in KS1, year 3 children will begin their Times Table Superstar journey. Times table knowledge is essential as your child moves up through the school and their hard work is rewarded with badges, calculators and a medal with the completion of Platinum level. For more information about Times Table Superstars, feel free to ask your child’s class teacher.

Children will also have access to Time Table Rock Stars - a fun, online computer program where they can take part in multiplication battles with friends and staff to reach ‘Rock Hero’ status. This online program is particularly useful to help prepare children in year 4 for the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). The MTC happens in June and is a series of 25 questions which need to be answered under timed conditions. The children can practise for this on Times Table Rock Stars using the ‘Sound Check’ function. To learn more about Times Table Rock Stars feel free to ask your child’s class teacher.

Accelerated Reader is introduced to children in year 4. It is a computer-based program that we use to monitor reading practice and progress.  Accelerated Reader is very popular at Malmesbury and your child will begin to use it to better their reading comprehension. Each year we have more and more children gaining ‘Word Millionaire’ status – why not ask your child how you can support them on this journey! Some children in the phase also have access to Nessy, an online reading and spelling program. If you child has access to this, log in details will be found in their home-school diary.

Over the year, we will enrich the children’s learning with trips or workshops. Year 3 will take part in both a Stone Age and Roman workshop as part of their history learning and the children can also look forward to a trip into London to visit the river Thames as part of their geography topic. In the summer term, year 3 will be given information about an exciting residential trip for the following year.

In Year 4, your child can look forward to a visit from Sutton and East Surrey water where a visitor will talk to them about the Water Cycle and the process our drinking water goes through. They will have the opportunity to go to Blackland Farm where they will participate in outdoor learning and games, learn survival skills and prepare for the year 6 residential to Fairthorne. They will have a Viking workshop as part of their history topic and they will also have a residential trip.

More information about the school day, our curriculum and home learning is available by following the links below.

If you need to speak urgently to any of our teachers, please come and see them at the end of the school day. If you need more time, please let the office know and they will be able to make an appointment for you at a suitable time.

Myself and the Lower Key Stage 2 team are very much looking forward to working with you and your child and sharing in their development and success.
