Years 3 & 4

Welcome to Lower Key Stage 2

Blackland Farm

Welcome to Year 3 and 4

I am the Phase Leader of Lower Key Stage 2 and I work as part of the Year 3 and 4 team to develop a broad and balanced curriculum and ensure consistency across the phase. At Malmesbury we have two Year 3 classes (Sycamore and Chestnut) and two Year 4 classes (Cedar and Pine). Year 3 is an exciting change as your child moves from Key Stage 1 up to Key Stage 2.  Following on from Magical Maths, the children will begin the Times Table Superstar journey! This knowledge is essential as your child moves up through the school and their hard work is rewarded with badges, calculators and a medal with the completion of Platinum level. For more information about Times Table Superstars, feel free to ask your child’s class teacher. Children also have access to Nessy, an online reading and spelling program.

Year 4 is another exciting year at Malmesbury. The children will begin using Accelerated Reader, a computer-based program that we use to monitor reading practice and progress.  Accelerated Reader is very popular at Malmesbury and in Year 4 your child will begin to use it to better their reading comprehension. Each year we have more and more children gaining ‘Word Millionaire’ status – why not ask your child how you can support them on this journey! The children will also start using Times Table Rockstars – a fun, online computer program where they can take part in multiplications battle with friends and staff to reach ‘Rock Hero’ status. To learn more about Times Table Rockstars feel free to ask your child’s class teacher.

Over the year, Year 3 will take part in both a Stone Age and Roman workshop as part of their history learning. The children can look forward to a trip to a local mosque as well as a Spring time visit to Morden Hall Park where they will look at classifying and investigating plants.

In Year 4, your child can look forward to a visit from Sutton and East Surrey water where a visitor will talk to them about the Water Cycle and the process our drinking water goes through. They will enjoy educational visits to the British Museum to explore the Anglo-Saxons and later on in the year a visit to the Science Museum where they will study the exhibits that relate to the topic of Electricity.

More information about the school day, our curriculum and home learning is available by following the links below.

If you need to speak urgently to any of our teachers, a brief message can be given in the morning or at the end of the day. If you need more time, please let the office know and they will be able to make an appointment for you at a suitable time.

Myself and the Lower Key Stage 2 team are very much looking forward to working with you and your child and sharing in their development and success.
