Years 1 & 2
Welcome to Key Stage 1

Welcome to Year 1 and 2
I am the Phase Leader of Key Stage 1 and I work as part the Year 1 and 2 team to develop a broad and balanced curriculum and ensure consistency across the phase.
Year 1 is an exciting year for the children as they transition into Key Stage 1. They will now play in the front playground, have weekly PE lessons with Miss Bennett (our PE specialist), music lessons with Mr. Thomas (our music specialist), and French lessons with Mrs. Fesnoux (our language specialist). They will also attend assemblies in the main hall with the rest of the school.
Year 1 and 2 have a range of exciting trips. Year 1 have a toy workshop where they learn all about the history of toys and they also go to Littlehampton for a day at the seaside! Year 2 go up to the South Bank for their ‘Walk in London’ as part of their ‘Our Wonderful City’ topic. They are also hoping to go to Chessington zoo in the summer term to learn more about animals and their offspring.
Children in Year 1 will take the Phonics Screening Check in June. This involves reading 40 decodable words. More information will follow nearer the time. Year 2 are no longer required to undertake the national Key Stage 1 SATs tests.
More information about the school day, our curriculum and home learning is available by following the links below but we believe that daily reading with your child is the single most important thing you can do to help them make progress across all areas of learning.
The children have weekly sessions in the library to choose or change a library book. The library is also open Monday to Thursday after school until 3.45pm so that you can go along with your child and help them choose a book.
If you need to speak urgently to any of our teachers, a brief message can be given in the morning or at the end of the day to one of the adults on the gate. Alternatively you can pop a note into their Home-School diaries, which we expect the children to bring into school everyday. If you need more time with the class teacher, please let the office know and they will be able to make an appointment for you at a suitable time.
Myself and the Key Stage 1 team are very much looking forward to working with you and your child and sharing in their development and success.
