We also had a very special 'reading party'. Children who have had Reading Recovery invited members of the school community to the library to read them a story. The children loved showing off their reading ability and the adults were very impressed! Miss Cavanagh is very proud of the wonderful readers they have become.
As an ECAR school, we are committed to ensuring all of our pupils are successful readers and indeed writers. Our range of intervention programmes provide targeted support for children who find reading and writing difficult. Reading Recovery is taught by a specialist teacher who also works closely with a team of dedicated teaching assistants to support their delivery of the Fischer Family Trust Wave 3 and Early Literacy Support programmes. Whilst the main focus of ECAR is KS1, adopting the philosophy behind Reading Recovery is impacting on literacy standards throughout the school.
At Malmesbury we choose the programmes that we know will motivate and support our pupils in their literacy learning.
We use Read Write Inc, in conjunction with the government’s ‘Letters and Sounds’ document, to deliver high quality synthetic phonics lessons. These daily lessons start in Reception and continue through KS1 and, for those children who need further phonics teaching, into KS2.
Bug Club is our online home reading scheme. Children have the opportunity to read the actual book in school and can then share their learning with an adult when they login at home and read the e-books.
KS2 children have the opportunity to challenge their reading comprehension skills through Accelerated Reader. Having read the book independently, they take an online quiz at school.
